Painters in
Glen Iris.

Interwar and postwar homes, and a great many extensions. Most of the work here involves making old and new read as one house.

Open living and dining space with a raked ceiling, timber floors and a freestanding fireplace flue.

Glen Iris

Where the old meets
the extension.

Glen Iris is mostly interwar and postwar stock — weatherboard, brick veneer, solid brick — and a high proportion of it has been extended at the back. That extension is usually where the painting question actually sits.

Old and new behave differently. Original weatherboard has moved and settled for eighty years and will keep moving; new cladding and plasterboard is dimensionally stable but has its own settling to do in the first year. Joined together, the junction between them opens up. Filling it hard with a rigid filler guarantees a crack; it wants a flexible sealant that can take the movement, and it wants to be understood as a moving joint rather than a defect.

The other half is colour continuity. Matching a new section to an existing painted surface is not a matter of reading the old tin, because the old surface has faded, chalked and yellowed for a decade. Matching to the tin gives you two visibly different whites. It has to be matched to the wall as it is now, or the whole surface has to be recoated.

What we watch for
in Glen Iris.

01

Moving joints

The junction of old and new is a moving joint, not a crack. Flexible sealant, not rigid filler, or it opens again by the second summer.

02

Matching to the wall, not the tin

Existing paint has faded and yellowed for years. Matched to the original colour code, a new section reads as a different white.

03

Weatherboard movement

Eighty-year-old boards keep moving. Preparation and product choice have to allow for that rather than fight it.

All four service lines,
across Glen Iris.

Heritage & period

Victorian, Edwardian and Federation homes. Lead-safe preparation, period-appropriate colour, and the slow detail work that stock demands.

Exteriors

Render, weatherboard, brick and trim, specified for a Melbourne year rather than for a Melbourne week.

Commercial & strata

Retail, offices and common property. Staged around trading hours and left clean at the end of every shift.
