Painters in
Canterbury.

Federation and Edwardian homes, much of it inside heritage overlay. Colour is not always a free choice here, and that is worth knowing before you start.

Canterbury

Heritage overlay,
and what it means.

A good deal of Canterbury sits within heritage overlay, particularly around Maling Road and the streets running off it. What that means in practice varies from property to property, and it is worth checking with Boroondara before settling on a colour rather than after.

Broadly, repainting in the same colour is usually exempt from any permit requirement, and changing colour on a contributory building sometimes is not. The rules turn on the significance of the building and the precinct rather than on paint as such, so two houses on the same street can sit differently. We are happy to talk through what we have seen, but we will point you at the council rather than guess on your behalf. Guessing is how people end up painting twice.

The stock itself is classic Federation and Edwardian: red brick, wide eaves, timber fretwork, shingled gables and leadlight. Period-appropriate colour is well documented for these houses, and the heritage ranges the major manufacturers publish are a sound starting point if you want something defensible.

What we watch for
in Canterbury.

01

Check the overlay first

Same-colour repaints are usually exempt. A colour change on a contributory building may not be. Boroondara can tell you in a phone call.

02

Period-appropriate palettes

Heritage colour ranges exist for exactly this stock — a defensible starting point when the overlay makes colour a question rather than a preference.

03

Shingled gables

Timber shingles need cutting course by course. Rolled over quickly they read as one flat panel from the street, and the gable loses its shadow.
