Painters in
Surrey Hills.

Californian bungalow country. Roughcast, shingles, heavy verandah posts and sleepouts — a very particular set of surfaces on one elevation.

Red brick side elevation with a black boundary fence, tiled roof and a paved path.

Surrey Hills

The bungalow,
surface by surface.

Surrey Hills is bungalow country, and the Californian bungalow is a genuinely awkward house to paint properly. It puts four or five different surfaces on a single elevation, and each of them wants something different.

Roughcast render in the gable, timber shingles beneath it, heavy squat verandah posts often in a different timber again, brick to the sill line, and timber-framed windows with wide reveals. Then the sleepout or enclosed verandah at the side, usually the oldest and most tired part of the house because it was rarely built to the same standard as the front.

Getting this right is a matter of not treating it as one job. The shingles need cutting course by course, the posts need their end grain sealed where they meet the deck, and the sleepout often needs timber repair before anyone opens a tin. Priced as a single exterior, it gets rushed. Priced surface by surface, it holds.

What we watch for
in Surrey Hills.

01

Timber shingles

Cut course by course. Rolled flat, they lose the shadow line that makes the gable read properly from the street.

02

Verandah post bases

Where the post meets the deck is where water sits and rot starts. Sealed end grain, or you are replacing posts inside five years.

03

Sleepouts and enclosed verandahs

Almost always the tiredest part of the house. Usually needs timber repair before painting, and we will say so at the quote.
