Blackburn holds some of the best mid-century housing in Melbourne — raked ceilings, clerestory glazing, deep eaves and a lot of exposed timber, sitting under canopy that was deliberately kept.
The recurring question here is whether to paint timber at all. Much of it was originally stained or oiled, and painting it is a one-way decision: once coated, it needs recoating forever and stripping it back later is expensive and rarely complete. Where the timber is sound we would usually rather re-oil it than sell you a paint job, and we will say so.
Where paint is right, the detail is in the junctions. Large glazed openings mean long runs of timber reveal meeting glass, and those are cut by hand. Deep eaves hold moisture and grow mould in the shade, so they want treating rather than washing. Established trees mean leaf litter and sap on horizontal surfaces, which has to come off properly before anything goes on.
